Whether we like it or not, the world has changed considerably in the last 10 years and it will continue to change even more so over the next 10!
We are all – to a degree – sticklers for change. We embrace the thought of change, but resist it when it appears to be thrust upon us, or when we are forced to make that ‘monumental’ shift. It doesn’t matter if it’s a change in the type of cereal from our favoured brand, or a newer version of the software we use on a daily basis. Change is change, and few of us leap forth into the unknown with enthusiasm. We do, however, often look back and think: “I can’t believe I resisted that! Imagine doing things the way we used to?”
You may all have a quiet chuckle to yourself at some of the things you’ve resisted and later embraced (who swore they would NEVER own a simplistic mobile phone, let alone a smartphone?), but as software suppliers we too encounter resistance on a daily basis from many of our customers. Some of our customers have been with us for 10 years, and we often get told “but we like the way we’ve always done things.”
However, technology changes at a speed which is hard to fathom at times, and often what is considered a new product is actually old by the time it hits the shelves! Our responsibility to our customers is to continually upgrade and evolve our products. If we didn’t, we would not be doing our customers a service as they too would be falling behind - not only in their industry, but against their competitors. And we all know that keeping that competitive edge in the small business market is critical to survival!
In fact, we can let you in on a secret: we struggled to come to terms with the need to switch from the Palm pilot to Android smartphones. We knew we had to do it, but we also knew it was going to be a long and difficult process. But by not doing it, we’d be left behind. And that ultimately wouldn’t benefit our customers. Guess what? We are so grateful we made the move! We’ve now been able to enhance Mobileezy to include so many more functions, which ultimately improve your business experience! Who doesn’t love the ability to email from the field, connect to Google maps, and make use of the integrated barcode scanner to name but a few? So yes, in terms of resisting change and then later embracing it: guilty as charged!
Ultimately, anything in the world of technology has a short life span and product improvement, enhancements, retirement and ultimately acceptance of the status quo is a hard pill to swallow at times. Smaller businesses struggle the most as they nurture their business and keep a watchful eye on expenses. This is all good and necessary, as long as it’s not to the detriment of the way their business operates going forward.
